The Rattel, Morongwa, and Maele Families

SerDev has been driving a livestock development project in the JTG District with one clear goal: to help local farmers grow into the commercial farmers of tomorrow. Among those who have embraced the project with exceptional commitment and positivity are the Rattel, Morongwa, and Maele families.

These multigenerational farmers have transformed their outlook on what it takes to build a thriving commercial farming enterprise. By prioritising modern management practices, they’ve laid a strong foundation for long-term sustainability. All three families are based on one healthy, well-managed farm, where they share the responsibilities of running operations and developing their herds.

In June 2025, following recommendations from SerDev monitors, the families collectively chose to sell their old bull. This decision, supported by the training they received, was aimed at improving the bloodline of their herd and increasing the quality of weaners sold to local markets. They went on to acquire a Beefmaster stud bull from a reputable local breeder.

To ensure they selected the right animal for their breeding objectives, the families sought the expertise of SerDev monitor Brian Rasehlo, who helped them identify a sound, healthy bull capable of producing high-quality weaners that meet market demands.

This journey is a powerful example of how SerDev walks alongside farmers—not only providing advice but actively supporting them in making the strategic decisions that drive growth and success in their farming ventures.

In the spirit of Women’s Month, SerDev proudly celebrates the strong women who are making a lasting impact in the agricultural sector. One such inspiring figure is Nametsegang Maele, the youngest member of her family’s farming operation.

Although a chemical engineer (Metallurgist) by profession, Nametsegang shares the same deep-rooted love for livestock farming passed down from her grandfather, Mr. Rattel, who laid the foundation for their farm. Today, she plays a vital role in the family business, ensuring that all records are accurately maintained and that sound management practices are implemented throughout the seasons.

As the successor to the family farm, Nametsegang envisions transforming it into a successful commercial enterprise. Her ambitions are fuelled by the invaluable insights gained from SerDev’s Mindshift and 15-Day Beef Cattle Management trainings, coupled with the guidance of dedicated monitors and mentors.

SerDev honours women like Nametsegang; women who are not only committed to learning and adopting modern farming practices but are also driving the future of agriculture forward with passion and purpose.
