Meet the Rattel family: A Story of Dedication and Growth
In the heart of the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District, something truly transformational has taken root. Through the dedication of SerDev, a wave of empowerment is spreading across the rural farming communities, one that promises to shape a new generation of commercial farmers in the red meat value chain.
What began as a series of training sessions and on-the-ground support has now blossomed into a deeply rooted movement. From proper tagging and vaccination protocols to embracing modern animal production practices, local farmers have taken up the call to uplift their herds and their futures.
But within this broader success story lies a deeply personal one that captures the spirit of what our projects are all about.
The Rattel Family: A Legacy in the Making
The Rattel family farm stands as a beacon of what is possible when knowledge meets determination. Inspired by the training and mentorship provided through the SerDev and its then project partners’ initiative, Mr Rattel and his family made a choice to not only absorb the lessons but to live them.
This season, the Rattels approached SerDev’s field monitors with a request: a full list of the vaccines and medications their cattle needed to stay healthy and productive. With guidance in hand, they purchased the required health products and once again reached out to us for manpower to implement the process correctly and professionally.
With sleeves rolled up and monitors by their side, the Rattels administered care to their herd with confidence. Their commitment was clear: they were no longer just recipients of support—they had become champions of best practice, determined to carry the baton forward.
The Future Looks Bright
This single story is not just an exception; it’s a shining example of what happens when empowerment meets action. The Rattel family represents the very essence of the JTG commercial farmers of tomorrow. They are living proof that with the right tools, support, and a little encouragement, family farms can evolve into commercially viable enterprises that contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s red meat sector.
Through projects like this, SerDev is sowing more than just skills; we’re planting confidence, independence, and long-term impact. And as more families like the Rattels step into their potential, the future of farming in the JTG area is not only secure but thriving.
